One of the new normal's that hydrocephalus parents and patients need to cope with is that at any moment shunt failure can occur. Every minute that passes during shunt failure increases the chances of permanent brain damage. During shunt failure, a patient's neurosurgeon should be immediately contacted and seen to undergo a shunt revision (aka brain surgery). This procedure puts travel and travel preparation into a new perspective. Before traveling with hydrocephalus, it is advised to identify where the best treatment will be and how long it will take to get to treatment if the worst happens and shunt failure occurs while you are away from home.
